Reviews: Kidtunes
Review from "The Sing-Alongs"
by Christopher Arnott - March 27, 2003
"Mabel may be an exception. She showed an early affinity for the classics, such as Buddy Holly and Eddie
Cochran. Soupy slow-jazz journeymen sloughing through standards and mulleted metalmongers mangling Mother
Goose are simply not Mabel's speed. She's more likely to appreciate Kidtunes, a 30-track various-artists
compilation we received from www.pianopress.com. Bouncy "family friendly" pop tracks like "Rock & Roll
Teachers," "Green Cookies" and "School is Cool" can be irresistible, especially when sung by actual
children in those raspy by-rote voices like you hear on Peanuts TV cartoons. Even cooler if you
actually know of some rock & roll teachers--locally, we can think of Shellye Valauskas, Steve
Bunovsky, Taylor Joyner, Frank Critelli, Amanda Just, Roger C. Reale, Bob Catalde ..." - The New Haven Advocate
Press Release:
"Kidtunes," recently nominated for Best Children's Album
in the 2002 Just Plain Folks Music Awards and entered in the first-round
ballots of the 45th Annual Grammy Nominations, includes thirty songs
by twenty-eight singer-songwriters from the U.S. and Canada. With
a fun and delightful mixture of musical styles (folk, bluegrass,
country, rock-n-roll), as well as children's and adult's voices,
the album includes over seventy minutes of family friendly entertainment.
Many of the songs were recorded and produced in Nashville, and in
other studios around North America. The tunes are easy to listen
to and sing along with, and appeal to all ages. With songs like
"Rock 'n Roll Teachers," "School is Cool," and
"Addicted to the Dictionary," the collection is great
for teachers too. Hear RealAudio files at www.pianopress.com/kidtunes.htm.
"Kidtunes" represents the combined talents of many accomplished
singer-songwriters and musicians. Included are the platinum-selling
songwriters Katherine Dines (for two songs on the Grammy-nominated
"A Child's Gift of Lullabyes") and Bob King (for his song
"Brother for Sale" recorded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson
and "Sandwiches are Beautiful" recorded by various artists).
Joyce Seamone had a #1 song and gold record in Canada for her song
"Testing 1-2-3," and Bob Blinn's song "I Still Can't
Say Goodbye" was recorded by the late Chet Atkins. Pete Seeger
plays banjo and sings background vocals on Danny Einbender's contribution
to "Kidtunes," "It Really Isn't Garbage." Well-known
San Diego artist/producer Peter Sprague produced Track 29 on "Kidtunes,"
"We're All Peas in a Pod," a song on cultural diversity.
Several of the songwriters on "Kidtunes" have won Parent's
Choice Awards, Dr. Toy Awards, and/or Children's Music Web Awards.
Many have won awards or been finalists in major songwriting contests,
including the Just Plain Folks Music Awards, the John Lennon Songwriting
Contest, the USA Songwriting Contest, and many regional songwriting
contests. Many of the artists have released their own successful
albums, and have had multiple cuts with various other artists. The
last song on the album, "It's All of Us Together," co-written
by Austin's Tommy Byrd and Ande Rasmussen of the online community
IFS, and sung by Nashville's Ronda Businda, is a soulful, thought-provoking
song about those less fortunate, and our responsibility to the world
community. The CD was produced by Elizabeth C. Axford, author of
"Song Sheets to Software," and mastered by John Dawes,
co-author with Tim Sweeney of "The Complete Guide to Internet
Promotion for Musicians, Artists, and Songwriters." A portion
of the proceeds from "Kidtunes" are donated to UNICEF
http://www.unicef.org.

Just wanted to tell you how pleased we are with the Kidtunes CD.
It really is a great set of songs. I think it's a good mix that
a lot of different age groups will enjoy, grown-ups as well. You
have done a great job also with the cover and notes, and what a
cute picture on the cover. I think you have done a terrific job
and I am proud to be a part of it. Thanks again for having me aboard.
